The workplace in all sectors of the economy has been affected by globalisation and new technologies. Mobility, the complexity and variety of the tasks to be performed, the volume of information, the acceleration of work processes and continuous change are all potential causes of stress. To these factors must be added the harsh climate on the job market which compounds pressure on individuals. 80% of absences from work are attributable to illness. Mental health problems are the main cause.
A number of studies and statistics illustrate the dimension of this phenomenon and its consequences in terms of economic costs:

  • Swiss State Secretariat for Industry (SECO) (2000) : "44% of the active population in Switzerland suffers from intense pressure at work, including 27.1% whose very high level of stress has significant physical effects (quoted in "Stress en entreprise" Ligue de la santé); the costs for the Swiss economy : 4,2 billion CHF.

  • The number of invalidity pensions due to mental health problems continues to increase.

  • Absenteeism-linked costs to companies are estimated at 6% of their salary bill.

  • Presenteeism-linked costs (i.e. where the employee is present physically but works inefficiently because there is disaffection within the organisation, e.g. poor working atmosphere, lack of motivation, burn-out etc) are estimated at 14% of the salary bill.
